With Main Tera Hero, Varun Dhawan does what a young hero in a Hindi film is expected to do. He has his share of fun, he dances, he romances, he kicks, he punches, he is naughty and basically, he has a solution for every problem. The boy makes best use of an out and out 'herogiri' affair by shrugging away what he did in Student of the Year and getting into an altogether different avtar for Main Tera Hero.
What works best though in this Ekta Kapoor production is that barring a few episodes, none of it turns out to be an overdose. This is evidenced by the fact that when there is action, it comes and goes without those slo-mo shots delaying the inevitable. If there are one liners (Milap Zaveri on fire yet again), they don't overpower just about every scene with a sing-song tone; they ensure that they don't overstay their welcome. If there is romance, then it never gets overtly mushy by taking one into haseen waadiyaan or khula aasmaan. When there are naughty elements on screen, they don't threaten to breach into the vulgar zone. Basically, the ingredients are just perfect and the recipe turns out to be good too.
There is a semblance to a storyline as well, what with an initial routine encounters between Varun and his adversary Arunoday Singh. A battle zone is set and while one wonders if this would primarily be the core plot revolving around the girl in question, Ileana D'Souza, the big twist around the interval sets the mood for a ripping second half to ensue. Introduction of Nargis Fakhri on the scene spices the proceedings and with a mad set up in Bangkok comprising of Anupam Kher and Saurabh Shukla (with Shakti Kapoor in a cameo), one knows that there would be vintage David Dhawan on display all over again.
This is what that happens as the narrative continues to move at a rapid pace with several laughter moments thrown in. There is one hitch though which is the journey towards the end. The film just goes on and on, especially towards the last 25-30 minutes. There are at least three points in the film when one thinks that it would be time for curtains to be down. However one sub-plot after another opens up, as a result of which the film appears to be a never ending journey. Does that turn boring though? No, not at all as even the scenes here bring on smiles. Still, a snappy finale would have kept things more interesting.

  • What is interesting though in which the situations are weaved well for most part of the film. Right from the film's beginning, there is at least one major moment in practically every scene that establishes once again that David Dhawan continues to follow Manmohan Desai's formula to the T. He gets complete support from his actors as well as technical team which ensure that visuals compliment the mood well and keep proceedings lively. The sets, locations, cinematography, background score, overall framing - just about everything is what makes Main Tera Hero a massy affair that time and again finds an audience.
Meanwhile, there are ample mini-episodes thrown in which act as good gimmicks. References to Ranbir Kapoor, Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Vidya Balan and others are played well, a jig on Badtameez Dil forms a connect with kids, 'kissing demonstration' - though a bit too stretched - is fun while Saurabh Shukla going mute, and that too twice, brings the house down. As for songs, while Palat is the pick of the lot, the ones in the latter part of the second half literally arrive back to back and extend the film's duration.
As for performances, Varun Dhawan exceeds expectations and comes up with such a delightful performance that you are bound to applaud him. In just his second film, he holds the frame entirely on his own. It would be interesting to see how he approaches his next, considering the fact that he has done just about everything here. Amongst Ileana D'Souza and Nargis Fakhri, it is the latter who comes trumps. After all the brickbats she got for Rockstar, she does well in this comic outing and looks wonderful too. Ileana D'Souza tries but doesn't really go over and above her part. Moreover, her makeup is inconsistent too.
Anupam Kher has a very meaty part for himself and thankfully makes one forget a mishap of an outing in O Teri last week. The man still manages to bring in newer nuances to his performance. Saurabh Shukla isn't required to be overtly funny but his part is interestingly written, though reminding of Johnny Lever's characterization in Housefull 2. Arunoday Singh is a revelation in a comic part and does quite well, despite carrying a brooding persona. Rajpal Yadav gets a major role after a really long time and delights one all over again. Manoj Pahwa is hardly there.
'This is what David Dhawan has been all about for years' - One can pretty much expect this statement to be made in front of their kids by those who have reveled films coming from the eternal entertainer in the times of 80s and 90s. If last year with Chashme Baddoor he showed once again that he still has it what it takes to woo the masses, Dhawan Sr. goes many steps ahead with Main Tera Hero with Dhawan Jr.
